In terms of earthquake size, this year is now the most seismically active year in Southern California since 1988. So far in 2024, the region has had 13 earthquakes measuring a magnitude 4.0 or greater. Southern California averages between ten and 12 earthquakes of that size in a normal year. The most recent was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake on Monday afternoon, centered near Highland Park and Pasadena. Cal Tech Seismologist Doctor Lucy Jones says the earthquake happened along the Puente Hills thrust fault system, which has the potential to cause major damage.
