California Bill Aims to Change Car Break-In Law

There’s a new push to change how California deals with car break-ins. State Senator Scott Wiener wants to close a legal loophole that requires owners prove their doors were locked when the crime happened.

Prosecutors say that small change will mean more burglars behind bars.

Wiener plans to introduce the bill in January and hopes the governor will sign it into law next year.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins says even if prosecutors have witnesses or video of a suspect breaking into a vehicle, they still have to prove that it was locked at the time.
