“Willful defiance” suspensions in California schools will be a thing of the past.

On Sunday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill that will ban the suspensions in middle and high schools. Schools will no longer be allowed to suspend students for behaviors like breaking the dress code, talking back to teachers, or using their phones while in class.

Suspension or expulsion for truancy or tardiness will also be banned. Schools can still suspend students for behaviors like possession of drugs or alcohol, physical violence, and bullying.
