People who end up getting caught watching vehicle sideshows in Alameda County are getting a break when it comes to potential jail time.
An ordinance passed in Alameda County will reduce jail times for those who are within 200 feet of a sideshow from 6 months to 3 months.
A sideshow involves spectators at street races and reckless driving exhibitions.
Violators of the new ordinance could see a three-month jail term, be charged with a misdemeanor, and be fined up to 1-thousand dollars.
Alameda County Public Defender Brendon Woods has concerns, including whether the ordinance is even constitutional. He is also concerned about people of color, such as Black and Hispanic people, being swept up by law enforcement just because they are Black and Hispanic.
The ordinance takes effect on August 9th.
