According to police data, San Francisco recorded more than 22,000 vehicle thefts last year. But The Standard’s analysis of police incident reports reveals that the North Beach neighborhood has the highest rate of car break-ins in the city.
In the past 30 days as of July 14, there were 190 thefts from vehicles reported in North Beach.
Comparing the data from July 2023 to the same period in July 2019, there were 2,432 incidents compared to 1,611.
The top five neighborhoods in San Francisco with the highest number of car break-ins per 10,000 residents in the 12 months leading up to July 14, 2023, are North Beach with 2,285; Japantown with 1,835; Presidio with 1,329; Russian Hill with 862; and Financial District/South Beach with 790 incidents.
