SF Unable to Lock up Shoplifters, so a Local Target Store Locks up Inventory

A Target store in San Francisco is locking some of its products behind security glass as shoplifting remains a concern for retailers. 

A TikTok user posted images of some products of the store on the city’s Folsom Street behind the glass since at least October, WNCT-TV reported.  

The National Retail Federation’s 2022 retail security survey ranked San Francisco and Oakland as the second-most hard-hit metropolitan area by theft in 2020 and 2021, behind Los Angeles. Recently, Whole Foods closed its flagship store in Downtown San Francisco, and just this week Anthropologie announced it would close its store in Union Square. 

Back in November, A Target exec told Fox Business that theft contributed significantly to a more than $400 million drop in gross profit during the first three quarters of its fiscal year compared to the previous year.

Nationwide, The National Retail Foundation estimates that it lost $94.5 billion last year due to shoplifting, according to the Wall Street Journal
