Governor Gavin Newsom and state Attorney General Rob Bonta made a surprise visit to San Francisco Wednesday. While walking the Tenderloin and SoMa, a local man caught Newsom by surprise by asking what he was doing to solve the fentanyl epidemic.

San Francisco resident J.J. Smith extensively covers the drug and homeless crisis that is ravaging the city on his Twitter account

Smith asked Newsom what he was going to do about the fentanyl epidemic. Newsom responded with, “You tell me what we need to do. That’s why I’m here.”

In a statement to Fox News, the governor’s office said he was there for a private meeting with cabinet members to discuss, “The state’s ongoing efforts to tackle the fentanyl crisis, homelessness, and other critical issues.”

Smith told a local reporter that he wanted to hold the governor accountable because he was a San Francisco resident and taxpayer.

According to a recent report, there has been a 41% increase in overdose deaths in the first three months of 2023 compared to the first three months of 2022 in San Francisco.
