The California Air Resources board has approved a new clean air standard which is expected to raise gas prices. In a 12 to 2 vote the board voted in favor of clean air standards. The plan’s goal is to cut emissions by 30 percent.
It would also raise the tax on gasoline 47 cents per gallon in 2025 with a 65-cent overall tax increase. Senate Minority Lead Brian Jones says, “this unelected group of wealthy bureaucrats, handpicked and directed by Governor Newsom, is shamelessly increasing gas prices so Californians are forced into electric vehicles”.
Northern California State Senator Brian Dahle says he is outraged by the change and calls this nothing more than a money power grab by Governor Gavin Newsom. Dahle estimates if this change goes forward, Californians could see gas prices increase upwards of 65 cents per gallon. He says if you factor in those costs, motorists would be paying nearly one dollar fifty cents just in taxes for a gallon. The CARB vote came just one day after the Governor called for a special session to protect the state’s climate following Donald Trump’s win.
