A coalition of Tribal and environmental organizations are fighting against the controversial Delta Tunnel project. They are taking a legal stance against the California Department of Water Resources for violating the California Environmental Quality Act.
Monday’s action contends that when the agency completed approval of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Delta tunnel project, it failed to address negative effects the project would have on Tribes, other marginalized communities, fish, and wildlife.
At stake are vast amounts of fresh water that the project would take from the San Francisco Bay-Delta estuary to Ag operations and large cities. It would also destroy Tribal sites that have been in use for thousands of years, along with the cultural practices tied to them.
