Retail Theft Committee Meets Next Week

California lawmakers will try to shine a light on retail theft and ways to address the growing problem. The first hearing of a new Assembly select committee will take place next Tuesday to begin work ahead of the January legislative session.

The committee of nine Democrats and two Republicans will hear from retailers both large and small, criminal justice reformers, law enforcement and representatives of workers and the public, according to a news release.

Blame for rampant theft is often assigned to the effects of Proposition 47, which made some non-violent property crimes, where the value does not exceed $950, into misdemeanors
