Kevin McCarthy has been removed as Speaker of the House. The first time in U.S. history that a speaker has been voted out of office.

McCarthy called for a vote on his speakership after Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz put forward the motion to vacate the chair.

The House voted 216-210 to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., with a handful of conservatives joining Democrats to remove him.

There were seven members absent.
