California’s Democratic lawmakers are throwing their support behind Governor Gavin Newsom’s drive to enact a constitutional amendment aimed at strengthening gun control laws.

Newsom’s Campaign for Democracy PAC introduced the amendment in a joint resolution, with Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer and Sen. Aisha Wahab as the legislative authors. The proposed measure seeks to convene a constitutional convention that would grant states and local governments the power to impose stricter limits on firearm ownership.

Dubbed the “Right to Safety Amendment,” the proposal includes provisions such as raising the legal age for gun ownership to 21, implementing universal background checks, imposing a mandatory waiting period, and banning assault weapons.

In addition to this constitutional amendment, California lawmakers are also weighing several state-level gun control bills. Newsom’s ultimate goal is to inspire gun control on the national level.
