BART has chosen a contractor to install 775 new fare gates across the Bay Area. They claim the initiative aims to improve safety and regain ridership.

The gates will feature “state-of-the-art” technology to reduce fare evasion. Standing at six feet tall, the gates will have swinging doors that are difficult to bypass.

The rollout of the new gates will begin in late 2023, starting with West Oakland. BART Board President Janice Li is committed to completing the project by 2026.

The estimated cost is up to $90 million, with $73 million already secured as of the March press release.
