San Francisco Walgreens Deters Shoplifters With Chains

By

/

A San Francisco Walgreens is using chains to stop shoplifters. A store in the Richmond District is the latest to take action as retail crime soars 20 percent.

The freezers are one of the biggest targets so now they’re locked up. Customers who want to buy a product must press a button and wait for someone to unlock the chains.

Workers say they get hit 15 to 20 times daily, with items like pizza and ice cream cleared out each night.

Several Safeway stores in the Bay Area have installed giant metal barriers at exits that warn an ‘alarm will sound’ if thieves try to leave the building.
