Steve Garvey, who won the National League MVP Award in 1974, is considering a Senate bid for 2024, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.
Garvey, spent his 19-year career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres
is meeting with voters and senior GOP officials – he discussed entering politics after retiring, but never followed through.
Andy Gharakhani, a Republican strategist who is advising Garvey, confirmed to the LA Times that Garvey is considering running. “He is being contacted by leaders up and down the state,” Gharakhani said. “They’re recruiting him to run from both sides, Republican and Democrat, and he’s seriously considering it.”
Eric Early, an attorney, is also running for the seat as a Republican and according to a recent poll, leading the race to replace Feinstein.
California’s electoral system provides for the two top-performing candidates from the primary to advance to the general election, regardless of party identification.
Garvey retired in 1987 after recording 2,599 hits, hitting .294 with a .775 OPS.
