Ahsha Safai, District 11 Supervisor in San Francisco, is officially challenging incumbent Mayor London Breed in 2024.

Safai, who has served on the Board of Supervisors since 2017 representing the Ingleside, Mission Terrace, and Excelsior neighborhoods, submitted the paperwork to run for the city’s top position.

As a supervisor, he sponsored Proposition C in 2022, which created the Homeless Oversight Commission to oversee The City’s Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing. While his paperwork declares his intent to run, Safai has yet to formally qualify for the ballot.

Safaí has been critiquing Breed for a few months leading up to this announcement, telling reporters things like he “didn’t hear a spirit of collaboration” from the mayor during her State of the City address in February.

Poll numbers from last October showed Mayor Breed’s approval slipped in 2022, from 49% to 36%.

That same poll showed 77% of voters disapprove of Safai’s board of supervisors.
